Q: How long is recovery?
A: The recovery process is different for nearly every type of procedure (See Procedures for more specific information), however you can expect that there will be at least some restrictions for about 6 weeks. However, some procedures may have very minor restrictions during this period while other may have many more. For this reason it is sometimes helpful to discuss with your surgeon not only recovery time, but intensity. Be sure to ask about the specific recovery for your procedure in advance and make plans to follow through with your recovery plan.
Q: Will I need help after surgery?
A: For even minor surgery it is helpful to have someone available for at least the first 12 hours. Most surgeries require assistance for at least 24 hours before you may be able to spend periods of time alone. Some surgeries may require significant assistance through the first week. It is always a good idea have someone available to help you with things such as housekeeping as several surgeries will have housekeeping restrictions for several weeks. Again, it is important to discuss your post-op needs with your surgeon in advance so you can make appropriate plans.
Q: Who will I see for follow-up appointments?
A: This can vary among different surgeons. Most practices have a Nurse or Physican’s Assistant (PA) that conducts at least some of the follow-up appointments. It is common for you to see your surgeon for at least one or two of your follow up appointments.
At Revalla, Dr. Hunsicker does all of the follow-up appointments with her patients. In fact she does not have a nurse or PA, so all clinical care is provided by her. Although there are exceptions, you can expect to see Dr. Hunsicker at least 4-6 times throughout your recovery.
Q: Is there anything to help with the bruising and swelling after surgery?
A: Arnica is a homeopathic medicine made from a perennial plant commonly found in the Northwestern parts of the US and Central Europe. The plant is commonly known as Arnica Montanta, mountain daisy or leopard’s bane and has been used for centuries by European mountain climbers to relieve sore, aching muscles and bruises. Today’s Arnica helps reduce swelling, bruising and discomfort, and helps shorten the recovery time after surgery. It is available as an oral tablet that dissolves under the tongue and as an external topical cream and gel. Arnica tablets can be taken before and after surgery to help with swelling and bruising. The topical cream and gel can be used for some surgeries as well. Arnica does not require a prescription and is commonly available at many pharmacies and health stores.
